Shift Happens

How things come together instead of falling into place.

Things rarely fall into place, but they always come together.

In September, I wrote about going to a block party in the arts district and how it made me want my own writing studio... or, at least to live closer to that part of town. Well, this weekend I moved to the neighborhood from that story. And while not a studio, this place has a spectacular four-season sunroom that just became my home office.

It'd be easy to say "See?! Everything falls into place", but that's not entirely true.

I actually scrolled past the listing on Zillow shortly after that block party... and then I just, kept on scrolling. A few weeks later, Isobel sent it to me, too, and said something along the lines of "did you see this?!?!"

"Yep", I'd told her, followed by a list of reasons why I shouldn't make a move on it.

A few more weeks passed, and we walked over to see it—just to look. And it was still available, so I finally called to ask about the space.

This weekend I got the keys.

The moment where things come together is only ever a fragment of the bigger picture. It's small, often short-lived, and only stands out so much because it spotlights the relief we feel. When things work out for us, we suddenly become aware of the tension we'd been holding until then. When it dissolves in an instant, it feels like things fell into place... but most shift happens over time.
