Daily Column

Side By Side

Making the space and taking the time.

When I looked up, I was surprised to see the crowd had disappeared entirely.

The coffee shop had been bustling when we got there. Isobel and I were meeting friends, so we'd grabbed a bigger table toward the back. The place had modern log cabin feel, but with the vibe of a loft. Like, the floors were concrete but the ceiling  was exposed wood. Light poured across the space through large windows and matte black metallic finishings accented the walls.

After chatting for a while, the group of us said our goodbyes. The coffee shop crowd had fizzled somewhat, so Isobel and I'd decided to stay put a little longer. It'd been a fun weekend trip, but we still had a long drive home ahead of us.

I refilled my coffee and pulled out my notebook.

Across from me, Isobel was already wearing her focused face behind her laptop. I like that we're both creatives. There's no need to explain the desire to unplug by zoning in rather than out. Knowing a social superbowl gathering was waiting for us on the other end of the approaching car ride, we'd shared a grateful glance before getting lost in our own worlds, side by side.

Out of nowhere, the words "Excuse me" lurched me from my thoughts and brought my awareness back to the coffee shop. I looked up to find the barista standing next to our table.

"We're actually closing—sorry"

I hadn't even noticed that everyone else already left.
