It was an accident. Ok—no it wasn't. But it's not like I went looking for it. It just sort of... happened. And I'm glad it did.
I don't go on facebook anymore; I haven't in years. The only aspect of it that I use is messenger, and even then, my use is sporadic at best. See, my mom has an android phone and I have an iphone. We use it to send photos because, for whatever reason, even in 2025, texting photos between apple and android is like trying to fax someone a sunset. So we use messenger. And today, when my mom messaged me, that's what I thought it would be.
Wrong.
It was a facebook marketplace listing. I should've mentioned—that's the other aspect of facebook I still use on very rare occasion. But mom? She's a marketplace maven. Sometimes it's "hey can you pick this up for me?" or "what are you doing after work today?" Both mean the same thing. Other times, it's links to stuff she thought I might like. I'm always touched that she thinks of me, especially when the item in question is a really good find.
Today's link was to a pretty decent looking leather chair.
"Nice, thanks for sending!"
Then I almost x'd-out. Like I was so, so close. But I didn't because something caught my eye. It was an item listed below the leather chair under the "you might also like" section. Staring back at me was one very beautiful typewriter. It seemed to be in good shape, too, from the looks of things. And the description said it worked.
A couple hours later, and I'm the new owner of a Royal KMM typewriter. Based on the serial number, it's from 1947. I also learned that this was the preferred machine of literary icons like Joan Didion, Ray Bradbury, Edward Abbey, and Margaret Mead.
With that, it's time to start collecting dust instead of pixels.
