Brave Enough To Ask For Help

Remembering to embrace collaboration.

One of my favorite quotes comes from a movie it wasn't even supposed to be in.

"Happiness can be found in the darkest of times if one remembers to turn on the light."

It's a line delivered by Albus Dumbledore, played by Michael Gambon, in the Harry Potter series. It shows up in the movie adaptation of Prisoner of Azkaban. The thing is, though, it never appears in any of the Harry Potter books...

It was written solely for that movie by screenwriter Steve Kloves.

I know some purists take issue with that, but personally I love it. I have other qualms with the books and the films, sure, but that's not one of them. Collaboration makes things better—that's a very firm belief of mine. Sticking strictly to the books would mean Michael Gambon never delivers that line on screen, and that's a quote that I think captures a very complex idea in an elegantly simple way.

To me, it says "you can always make another move."

I especially love it in this context because it builds upon an existing ethos of Dumbledore's which says that "help will always be given to those at Hogwarts who ask for it."

Together, I take them to mean "never counting yourself out" & "being brave enough to ask for help."
