Becoming Unobstructed

Settling In, Figuring It Out

Written by Derek MacDonald | August 2, 2025

Over the last year and a half, I've settled into the rhythm of creating, editing, and publishing my newsletter and podcast. It took some trial and error but it fits in my daily life now, largely without thinking.

So it feels kind of weird to be figuring out this new, daily email thing.

I'm still getting used to it... do I write in in the morning and schedule-send it? Or at night, then live-send it? I don't want to pre-write and schedule these things days in advance—the whole point is to document my journey in real-time each day. These are the growing pains I'm facing.

Isobel and I just got back from a lovely, week-long trip where we were enjoying a much needed change of scenery. With it, we deviated from our normal, daily schedules somewhat. It was really, really nice. I still got up early-ish to savor my morning writing time, like usual. But that's typically reserved for other project work. Now, I'm in need of knowing where to place this new, BUDS adventure in my day.

Here's what I'm reminding myself: find what you can trim before starting from scratch. And when it feels like what you’re doing isn’t working, find one thing to get rid of... not seven.

As always, the hardest part is resisting the urge to change everything at once.

onward.
