Becoming Unobstructed

What's Old Is New

Written by Derek MacDonald | October 31, 2025

I don't know why I'm suddenly resisting innovation. For most of my life, I've been driving it. My field of study and the jobs I've held sit at the forefront of the digital revolution. But now, with all this tech horsepower at my fingertips, I don't want it.

This morning I read and drank my coffee in silence. Sitting at my desk, I journaled and wrote my top three things for the day by hand. Yes, I use project management tools, but after lots of trial and error, I find they're best for big-picture progress while pen and paper are great for daily accountability.

I wrote and worked without scrolling. I met Isobel for lunch.  She showed me her new, manual film camera, which she's psyched about. Later, I picked up materials to clean and refurbish my new (old) typewriter. I even took a crack at taking it apart and putting it back together.

Rebelling feels strange these days—slow instead of hustled and quiet instead of boisterous. It's kind of unsettling... and completely amazing at the same time.

What's old is new again, and I like it.
