Closing It Down

Written by Derek MacDonald | March 13, 2026

Today's Isobel and my anniversary, so we got coffee at the place where we (accidentally) first met.

I told part of that story once in an essay, but we technically met on a dating app. We'd arranged to go on a date, but hadn't expected to run into each other at a local coffee shop the day of, hours before. She'd been there with her best friend, Jenny, and the three of us ended up chatting for quite a while. In fact, we got lost in conversation until late afternoon when they closed. Then, that night, Isobel and I went on the original date we'd planned and closed that place down, too.

So today we're doing it again—grabbing drinks at the same place after an afternoon spent at that coffee shop. It's sort of become a tradition of ours.
